My Approach
Amy Van Dongen| BA, DKATI, RCAT
Okanagan-based, Registered Art Therapist

My approach as an art therapist is very much grounded in person centred art therapy with a feminist approach. I also interweave positive psychology when appropriate with clients. I believe it is important for the client to lead the direction of their own process. I guide and encourage clients to create spontaneously or guide them through directives. I believe that groups can be healing through the power of universality and feeling connected. Both can be powerful depending on your needs.

In finding creative ways to express and understand ourselves better, we are better able to imagine and make change in our lives and relationships (personal and professional), and to create more balance amidst our whirlwinds.

While creating, clients find different ways of exploring materials that they hadn't thought of before. I offer a variety of art supplies in right now my Mary Poppins, Little Art Therapy Room with the hope of sparking somthing inside of you. It brings me great joy when someone is drawn to a found object, a medium or even a recyclyable material I brought in. Maybe that sounds silly, but in a theraputic sense- that joy, sadness, anger any association you had to that scrap material that day, tells apart of your story. That is why I find so much joy when someone chooses a recycled material, that means someting to them. If this feels like the right approach for you, or you want to find out more.
